What process do you use to transfer records and tapes?
All transfers are played in their original formats (i.e. record player, cassette deck, reel to reel player, etc.) and are recorded onto a computer where any digital filtering or correction is done. From there the files are saved as uncompressed .wav files (for CD) or converted into mp3, wma, AAC,m4a, or any other format requested by the customer. Resulting files are burned to an audio or data CD as needed.

I have reel to reel audio tapes. How do I know how much audio I have?
To determine how long your tape will run, use the following chart to estimate the length based on the size of the reel:

3 3/4 ips
7 1/2 ips

Unfortunately with so many variables to choose from it is difficult to determine just by looking at a reel as to how long it will run. Typically most consumer-bases audio recorders ran at a speed of 3 3/4 ips (inches per second). At this speed, a 7", 1200 foot reel would hold about one hour of stereo audio on each side. Some machines recorded the "side 1" sound on the odd (1 & 3) tracks, with tracks 2 & 4 reserved for sound going in the opposite direction. Other machines used tracks in pairs (1&2 and 3&4), making it difficult to play back properly without the original machine used for the recording. Our transfer machine is a professional level 4-track tape recorder which allows us to monitor the audio on all 4 tracks at once and determine which ones are going in the proper "direction". It is also a multi-speed machine so we have the ability to play back audio recorded on any brand of 1/4" tape recorder.

How is the transferred audio put onto audio CD?
When possible, your transferred audio will be placed onto a single CD. In the case of tapes holding more than 80 minutes, we will split the audio program onto 2 or more discs depending on the total length. We will also split the audio into separate tracks so you will be able to skip forward or back through the program material as you would with a regular CD. For tapes cotaining music, we will look for the "quiet spots" between songs to place these track splits; in the case of spoken material, we will insert splits approximately every 5 to 10 minutes and attempt to put them at logical, quiet locations. Regardless of where tracks are split, when played back they will be able to play smoothly from track to track and the splits will not be noticeable.

My records/tapes are old. Are they still playable?
We are very careful in the handling of your materials. We thoroughly inspect and clean records prior to transfer and any magnetic tape breaks are repaired as they occur. Record that have skips or scratches can be improved using special filters available with our audio software.

How long does it take?
Our typical turnaround time for most jobs is a few days to 2 weeks depending on the size of the job and how busy we are at certain times of the year. Larger jobs may take a little longer. During the holiday season we tend to get very busy so if you are looking to have your items transferred in time for Christmas we recommend getting them to us as soon as possible, but if we receive your films by early to mid December we can usually have them ready in time..

What is the cost?
