8MM, SUPER-8, AND 16MM FILM TRANSFERS TO DVD, BLU-RAY, AND OTHER DIGITAL MEDIA FORMATS

film to video conversionHome movie film has been around almost as long as the film medium itself. From the 1920s until it was largely replaced by videotape in the 1980s, film has porvided a way for families as well as buisnesses and ogranizations to document their respective histories.

Unlike videotape, which typically has a limited lifespan of only a few decades, home movie film continues to be viable for transfer even after generations have gone by. However, it will not last foerver, and a digital transfer is the best way to preserve those contents for years to come.

HIGH DEFINITION FILM TRANSFERS

In addition to transferring film for standard definition DVD and media files, our system allows the use of modern high definition digital video camera elements for full HD 1920x1080 pixel captures. The "VHS" of it's time, 8mm and Super-8 film is however theoretically capable of an equivalent of over 1000 horizontal pixels (whereas standard definiton DVD quality video has 720 horizontal pixels), so if your film is in very good shape, a solid film stock (such as Kodachrome) was used, and the film was shot with decent lighting and exposure, it is possible to see some additional detail using a high definition transfer. Ultimitely the best candidate for HD transfer is 16mm film, which has a far closer equivalent resolution (given some of the factors listed above) to today's 1920x1080 high definition format.

HD transfers are typically rendered to high definition Blu-ray discs but can also be delivered as HD media files that are compatible with a variety of editing software packages and media players as well as mobile devices.

OUR PROCESS

film to dvd convcersion New HampshireAll film brought to us is examined, repaired, and organized prior to transfer. Each reel is labeled with a unique serial number assigned to the specific client. Any film breaks (typically occurring due to weakened original splices) are repaired during the transfer process. We use professionally modified telecine equipment in conjunction with professional quality CMOS high definition camera systems for stunning, flicker-free transfers.

All reels are captured digitally to our dedicated transfer computer system where we apply color, brightness, and contrast correction. Once completed, files are rendered to high quality MPEG-2 files (for DVD) or H.264 files (for HD Blu-ray) or other optional digital file formats. The final step is the creation of motion menus with reel numbers or descriptions (see below) prior to burning to disc. For customers requesting digital files only, we export mastered files reel by reel in the desired format to external hard drvies, USB thumb drives, or data discs.

FILM TRANSFER DISC MENUS

film transfer custom menuTypically organized by topic or in chronological order, every film transfer to DVD or Blu-ray includes free motion disc menus that index each reel along with a short description. By default we use the serial number on each reel but we also offer free menu titles (5-10 words each) which can be supplied on page 2 of our Film Transfer Order Form. Custom titles and descriptions can be added to both the disc menus as well as the disc label and case insert.
